Project Type: Single Family Residential, Renovation
Location: Toronto, Canada
Status: Complete
Nestled within the winding streets of the Sunnyside neighborhood, just east of High Park, this renovation reimagines the first floor of a single-family home as a connected and vibrant social hub. Through a collaborative design process, the reconfiguration transforms an introverted, enclosed kitchen and dining area into an open, harmonious space that bridges the new and the old.
At its core, the project establishes a dialogue between contemporary design and traditional craftsmanship. Features such as a glass block window, intricate moldings, and subtle material transitions are thoughtfully preserved and celebrated, contrasting with sleek, modern interventions. By reorienting the kitchen, physical and visual barriers between communal spaces are removed, creating a seamless flow for cooking, dining, and gathering. Expansive rear windows draw in natural light, brightening the interiors and strengthening the home’s connection to its surroundings.
